About Ashtanga Monterey
Who are we? Among our students are a variety of people: young and old, beginning and advanced, all seeking Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
We met in various yoga classes across the Peninsula, from Monterey to Pacific Grove to Carmel. Many of us had studied with certified Ashtanga teachers from around the globe, including Pattabhi Jois himself. In 2006, a shortage of Ashtanga opportunities in the area led us to form a community of our own. We rented a dance studio for the early mornings, bought heaters to eliminate some of the winter chill and kept practicing, talking, and sharing yoga. Teachers from among our group volunteered to share their knowledge, accepting little or no compensation.
In February of 2007 we created our own studio, dedicated to Ashtanga Yoga. We painted the walls, laid a hardwood floor, and opened our doors. As a group, we have donated money, labor, cleaning, web site development, financial planning, and some teaching.
Together we are a co-operative: Ashtanga Monterey. Our studio offers Ashtanga Vinyasa Led classes, Mysore style classes, self-practice, and workshops by guest Ashtanga teachers. Come visit us and you will feel the warmth and joy of a group who has a desire to practice together and share Ashtanga Yoga with the community of the Monterey Peninsula.
